Endodontics, more commonly known as root canal treatment, takes care of the damaged or infected contents of the pulp chamber and root canals deep inside the tooth and the tissues that surround it. Root canal treatment is needed if you are suffering from advanced dental decay or the tooth has fractured as a result of injury.

In either case the pulp of the tooth has become exposed to bacteria, allowing infection to develop, which can even result in an abscess that can be extremely painful and distressing.

At Albion Dental we use only the latest endodontic techniques and equipment in order to access and remove the infected dental pulp and fill and restore the tooth so that its does not need to be extracted. In the past root canal treatment had a reputation for being a long and painful process, but under normal circumstances today’s treatment is virtually pain-free. A local anaesthetic is given to numb the affected area and you should experience no more discomfort than with a routine filling.

A few patients may experience minor sensitivity for a few days after root canal treatment. This discomfort can be easily relieved with over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, and our dentists are always happy to advise.
